Dr. Nick Miskulin, dentist, and Emily Severson, dental assistant and hygienist, see patients at the Chippewa Valley Technical College Dental Clinic. The pair recently traveled to the Dominican Republic to volunteer their time and skills caring for patients there.
During their seven-day trip to the Dominican Republic, Miskulin and Severson saw 229 patients. Many of the patients traveled four or more hours by foot for dental care.
When Emily Severson and Nick Miskulin talk about donating their skill, money and time to help underprivileged people receive much-needed dental care, they act as if it’s common — as if everyone takes a week off from work to fly to the Dominican Republic on their own dime to work for free.

“I want to help people, ” Miskulin, an Eau Claire dentist, said as a matter of fact. “With these types of trips, you get so much more than what you give. It’s a life-giving experience, and it really puts things into perspective.”
Miskulin and Severson traveled to the Dominican Republic’s Santa Cruz del Seibo region in January. A five-hour flight, a similarly timed coach bus and then a flatbed truck ride up mountainous terrain brought the dentist and Severson, a dental assistant, to the remote dental clinic building. During their one-week mission, they served 229 patients needing various dental repairs and emergencies.
Severson, a part-time dental assistant at Chippewa Valley Technical College, caught the mission bug nearly 10 years ago when she went to the same clinic to help out for the first time. She “blames” Dr. Gary Hendricks, a preceptor dentist from Cumberland who is retired.

Hendricks worked at the college a couple times a week and would tempt the other dental employees with his mission trip photos from the Dominican Republic.
“He would walk by and say, ‘Emily, come here and look at these, ’ and they were just beautiful, ” Severson said. “I’ve always wanted to do a mission trip. He was instrumental. He has organized the trip for 20 years. It’s a well-oiled machine.”
Miskulin, who moonlights at Chippewa Valley Technical College as a dentist and instructor one day a week, performed his dentistry fellowship at the college from 2019 through 2020. Now, he works with his brother at their business, Oakwood Hills Family Dental, three days a week, and at the college as an adjunct professor and dentist in the clinic.

“It’s a good way to break up my week and a good way to give back to the community, ” he said of spending a day a week at the college.
Fellow Chippewa Valley Technical College dental assistant and hygienist instructor Pam Entorf said the mission trip is on her bucket list. And she’s excited Severson and Miskulin have been able to help so many people.
“Emily (Severson) said it is one of the most amazing experiences, ” said Entorf, who was named the 2022 John Frank Outstanding Educator Award recipient. “Both Emily (Severson) and Nick (Miskulin) are great people and very knowledgeable.”

“What really matters here is we’re just people helping people, ” Miskulin said. “I want to immerse myself in those situations so I can learn and grow into the best dentist that I could possibly become and do what I can to serve people.”

Most Caribbean nations accepting travelers from the U.S. have designated America as a "high risk" COVID-19 country and thus require travelers from the country to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test within as few as three to five days of arrival. But standards can vary across the region. Some Caribbean countries, including Aruba, only "encourage" travelers to obtain proof of a negative test prior to arrival. The Dominican Republic recently implemented a Responsible Tourism Recovery Plan under which travelers are no longer required to present a negative COVID-19 test at Dominican airports to enter the country. Regardless of regulations in the country to which your clients plan to travel, it is undeniably prudent for travelers to get tested before departing, if only to confirm their personal health status relative to COVID-19 prior to traveling. But checking the specific requirements in the country you are visiting will prevent further problems upon arrival.
Caribbean government and tourism websites offer the most updated information regarding current protocols for regional countries, which can vary significantly. Some Caribbean governments have changed protocols and requirements several times as more is learned about the illness. Entry requirements also vary within the region. For example, high-risk visitors to the Bahamas and Barbados are required to quarantine for up to 14 days upon arrival. Anguilla requires potential visitors to pre-register online at the Anguilla Tourist Board's website and provide information including proposed travel dates. The Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands both changed protocols earlier this summer due to local COVID-19 spikes. That's why it's crucial that travelers access data from official tourism authorities in the Caribbean destination they plan to visit this fall. "The most important things to know about traveling right now is to understand all the protocols that are in place in both the destination and resort you are visiting, " said Varghese, owner of the Travel Tom agency. Not surprisingly, Caribbean countries that "have shown that they have great measures in place to protect our clients as well as provide a relatively hassle-free means of entry" have been most popular with his clients, Varghese said. He cited Antigua and St. Lucia as destinations where "both the countries and resorts are taking great measures to keep our clients safe while providing a great travel experience." Doncsecz meanwhile advises consumers to select their Caribbean vacation targets carefully. "When we have last-minute travelers, we tend to stay away from suggesting destinations that 'intend' on reopening by a certain date, " said Doncsecz, "and suggest destinations that are already reopened." She noted "Barbados, Turks & Caicos, and The Bahamas have flip-flopped on their entry requirements and reopening dates, " making it imperative travelers access the latest information. Travelers can find government ministry and tourism agency links for 24 Caribbean destinations on the Caribbean Tourism Organization's website. The Centers for Disease Control recommends Caribbean-bound travelers consult the destination's Ministry of Health or the U.S. Department of State's Country Information page. In addition, the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association maintains a Resource Center that provides regional alerts, travel advisories and airline and accommodation policies and guidelines.
Travel insurance coverage tied specifically to COVID-19 is limited according to travel insurance consolidation firm Squaremouth. Benefits may be available depending on the situation, including coverage for COVID-19-related cancellations or medical emergencies. However, travelers can also protect themselves in case an unforeseen COVID-19 scenario impacts their plans with a "cancel for any reason" policy from a leading provider.

Rather than perusing the national murder rate, most people choose their vacation destination by considering factors like attractions and amenities. However, it's worth noting that between 2012 and 2017, the murder rate in the Dominican Republic decreased from 22.1 per 100, 000 to 14.9. That being said, the D.R. made headlines in 2019 for the deaths of 11 American tourists. Autopsy reports found that all deaths were due to natural causes, but many still questioned whether they were linked or related to tainted alcohol. Three of the Americans died at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana and two died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. And in January 2019, a woman was brutally attacked at the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana.
